PLASTIC SURGEON AWARDS – THE GOOD, THE BAD AND THE PHONY

San Francisco Plastic Surgeon Dr. James Anthony explains the myriad of medical awards and their individual merit.

With the advent of medical advertising and then the internet and social media, physicians and particularly plastic surgeons, have sought to separate themselves from their peers. Since medicine is a field in which quality is of great importance to the consumer (patient), claims of quality have inevitably found their way into medical marketing. Beyond the basics of Board -certification in a particular field there are now a number of organizations created to recognize the accom” target=”_blank”>plishments of individual physicians. While each of these recognizing bodies is a for-profit entity, the basis of how doctors are selected, and therefore the real value of these awards, varies widely.

Some awards are selected by voting among other doctors (peer-selected), some are based on the evaluation of the selecting organization, and others seem to be awarded to any doctor willing to pay for them. (Full Disclosure – I have been awarded each of the awards mentioned, though I have declined to accept those described in the penultimate paragraph).

Two of the most established awarding organizations, Best Doctors (www.bestdoctors.com) and Castle and Connolly Top Doctors (www.castleconnolly.com) use peer evaluations (votes from other physicians) as the basis for their awards. These awards are essentially determining who are “the doctor’s doctors.” Naturally this is a more selective process, with 5% or less of all physicians receiving these awards.

But most medical awards are given with no obvious input from the medical or specialty boards, other physicians or even patients. Somewhere in the middle of the selectivity curve are awards such as “America’s Top Surgeons.” The award, granted by the Consumer Research Council of America, is “based on a point value system that awards points for education, years in practice and affiliations with professional organizations.” Reasonable, but not very selective criteria really since there is no physician input, or patient input for that matter, goes into this selection. Awardees (presumably older doctors who’ve paid to join a lot of medical organizations!) are notified upon receipt of their award that if they wish to buy plaques, globes and even crystal awards displaying their achievement they are available for purchase.

Then there are those awards which seem to be little more than a marketing tool – available to any physician willing to purchase the award. I receive an email almost every week notifying me that I have been nominated as a “Best Surgeon,” “Compassionate Doctor,” etc., followed by an offer to purchase a plaque or advertising space in the magazine which has just nominated me. I was once told that I had been nominated for an award and if I were willing to offset the costs of printing a book of awardees, I could accept my award. When I declined, I was told my nomination for the award was being withdrawn.

Given the many awards available, prospective patients would do well to evaluate the selection criteria for a doctor’s award(s), rather than assume that a doctor’s awards are the result of a particular level of achievement.
