What Are My Implant Options?

During your initial consultation with Dr. Anthony, he will help you select the implant type that best suits your body’s size and shape, as well as your desired outcome. Implants for augmentation come in a variety of shapes, sizes, textures, and profiles—each of which will be carefully considered with your ideal results in mind.

Silicone vs. Saline

The most common types of implant are silicone or saline, both of which are widely popular and approved by The Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Women considering saline implants must be at least 18 years old, while patients must be at least 22 years old to undergo treatment with silicone. Other options include a form-stable implant known as a “gummy bear” implant, and fat grafting (known as a fat transfer). In addition to the type of implant used, there are other distinct factors to decide.

Size

Breast implant size is distinguished based on the cubic centimeters (CCs) of saline or silicone used. To choose the right volume, Dr. Anthony will measure how much native breast tissue exists, while also considering the size you hope to achieve. In the operating room, it is normal for Dr. Anthony to temporarily switch out various implants to get a better idea on a suitable fit.

Shape

Implants come in either a teardrop or round shape. Both of these shapes are widely used; however, most of our patients choose a round implant. This shape generally looks and feels more natural, while adding a fullness to the top of the breast that many patients look for.

Profile

Implant profile concerns the way your implant will look when viewed from the side angle. Most projections include low to extra high ranges.

Breast Augmentation With Fat

Also called a fat transfer breast augmentation, a breast augmentation with fat is a procedure that uses liposuction to take fat from other parts of your body and is injected into the breasts. This procedure is a great option for women seeking just a small increase in breast size with natural results.

Had breast augmentation done by Dr. Anthony 4 years ago. My other Dr. overscored my tissue and I "bottomed out" and was lopsided. Dr. Anthony fixed them and they still look as good as ever. The staff was very professional as well.

Making Your Choices

While it can seem like all the options are a bit overwhelming, choosing the appropriate implant is actually quite easy—especially once Dr. Anthony has had the chance to learn and consider your specific desires. These considerations, coupled with Dr. Anthony’s wide range of skill and experience, help to ensure that you come away looking the way you want.

Dr. Anthony’s Surgical Technique

Breast augmentation is an outpatient procedure with the patient under general anesthesia. Before your surgery, Dr. Anthony will talk with you about things like Incision placement and implant location so you can go into your procedure knowing exactly how it will be performed.

During the breast augmentation procedure, the incision is made, and the implant is placed into position using one of two techniques: under the muscle, or behind the breast tissue but over the pectoral muscle. This depends on a variety of factors, including the overall type and size of implant, along with the Dr. Anthony’s professional expertise.

Following the incision, the chosen implant will be moved through the incision opening and deposited into a surgically created pocket, and then secured into its correct position. Once the implant is in position, the incision is carefully secured with skin adhesives or sutures.

Scarring is usually minimal, regardless of incision placement. Placement and location will be based upon your implant size, activity level, and body type.

What Can I Expect After My Breast Augmentation?

After your procedure, you’ll be taken to a private recovery space and monitored prior to being released. You’ll wear a compression bra to help reduce swelling and bruising, which will subside over the next several days.

Within a week or so, your breasts will start to look and feel normal as they settle into their new position.

Most patients can engage in everyday activities within a few days; however, physical exertion such as exercise should be delayed for a couple of months. Dr. Anthony’s San Francisco breast augmentation procedures focus on achieving optimal outcomes with a natural look and feel, which can be a life-changer for many women. FAQ

How Much Does Breast Augmentation Cost?

Your cost for breast augmentation will vary depending on your choices and whether you include any additional procedures. One Dr. Anthony has developed your treatment plan, he will review your estimated costs and financing options.

Do I Need a Breast Lift or Augmentation?

Your personalized treatment plan may include implants, a lift, or both. Breast lift surgery removes loose skin and raises the breasts, while implants enhance the shape and size. During your consultation with Dr. Anthony, he will go over your concerns and goals before discussing your treatment options. A mommy makeover, for example, typically involves both an augmentation and a lift to revitalize the breasts after breastfeeding and pregnancy.

Can I Breastfeed with Implants?

If you intend to breastfeed after augmentation surgery, talk to Dr. Anthony during your consultation. It's usually possible to breastfeed after augmentation surgery, given the proper placement and technique. Breastfeeding and pregnancy can affect your results, however, which is why it’s recommended to wait until your family is complete to get breast surger

Can I Have My Implants Removed?

Should you decide that you’d like to remove or replace your implants, breast revision surgery is always an option. Your implants can either be replaced with new ones, or removed altogether. If you want to have your implants removed, you might need to have a breast lift, as larger implants may stretch your skin. For any concerns or questions after your augmentation surgery, schedule a consultation at our practice to learn more about your options.

Do Implants Cause Breast Cancer?

The FDA (Food and Drug Administration) is investigating a link between implants and ALCL (anaplastic large cell lymphoma). This isn't breast cancer, but rather a cancer of the immune system. According to the WHO (World Health Organization), implant-related ALCL is very rare, and is highly treatable when caught early. Dr. Anthony encourages all patients with implants to get frequent screenings for breast cancer. You should also contact our office if you see any concerns (such as swelling).
