Plenty of men suffer from enlarged male breasts, a condition known as gynecomastia. This creates a feminine-looking chest due to the increased presence of growing breast tissue. In most cases, gynecomastia is related to an unknown hormonal problem, but can also be caused by certain medications, steroids, weight gain, or genetics. Men with this condition often feel self-conscious, most commonly in situations where the chest is exposed, such as the beach, pool, or gym. Board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. James Anthony performs San Francisco gynecomastia procedures to correct this condition. As a highly experienced plastic surgeon, Dr. Anthony has granted a high number of men the confidence and self-esteem boost they deserve with this procedure.

Am I an Ideal Candidate for Male Breast Reduction?

Male breast reduction treatment is reserved for men with overly sized breasts that can’t be treated through medications or diet. If you feel bothered by the size and shape of your chest (but you're healthy and at a good weight) and you’re interested in male breast reduction in San Francisco, you might be an excellent candidate for gynecomastia surgery.

Adolescent teens can also benefit from gynecomastia surgery, but should know that an additional procedure may be needed later on if excess breast tissue continues to develop into adulthood.

During your in-person consultation with Dr. Anthony, he will walk you through various treatment options, including the chances of moving forward with surgery to correct the condition. This will ensure that you feel safe and confident in every step of your procedure.

Dr. Anthony’s Surgical Technique

Gynecomastia surgery is done under general anesthesia, and a form of liposuction is utilized to eliminate excess fat tissue from the internal chest region. After liposuction, any lax skin will be carefully trimmed away to produce a natural, taut look, and then the nipple area and surrounding areola will be surgically re-shaped and placed into a proportionate position. For most men, this treatment strategy requires an incision in proximity to where the glandular tissue has formed. After the pockets of fat and excess skin have been appropriately handled, Dr. Anthony will pull together the remaining skin.

What Can I Expect After My Procedure?

After your gynecomastia surgery is complete, your chest will be supported with a compression bandage to help control swelling, bleeding, and bruising.

For complex cases that require a more intricate approach, a small tube for draining may be placed to help with fluid. You’ll see results almost immediately, noticing that your chest looks more masculine and sculpted right after your procedure.

Incisions made during surgery will take some time to heal, with any scarring being well-hidden. With your newly contoured chest, you may get medical clearance from Dr. Anthony to incorporate exercise and weight training, which will help accentuate the surgical results.

FAQ

How Much Does Male Breast Reduction Cost?

The cost of gynecomastia surgery at our clinic can range from patient to patient. Excessive male breast tissue is a medical problem that is best handled by a highly experienced surgeon like Dr. Anthony, who specializes in advanced techniques for elegant, naturalistic results. We accept several payment methods and can help you locate low-interest financing to ensure that your procedure is as affordable as possible. While surgery for gynecomastia is generally not covered by insurance, it's worth contacting your insurer to just to check.

What Causes Gynecomastia?

Gynecomastia develops due to a hormone imbalance, and can be connected to the use of androgens and anabolic steroids. It may also be the result of using illegal drugs, including marijuana or heroin. Gynecomastia can also be triggered by some medical conditions (hyperthyroidism, hypogonadism, and tumors), plus some medications (highly active antiretroviral therapy for AIDS, chemotherapy, and anti-anxiety medications).

How Can I Tell If I Have Gynecomastia?

Gynecomastia occurs when there is an overgrowth of breast tissue in the chest, which can cause swelling, pain, and tenderness. Some patients might have pseudogynecomastia (false gynecomastia), so Dr. Anthony suggests that potential patients lose weight by following an exercise plan and healthy diet before considering surgery. If you have excess breast tissue while also maintaining a healthy weight, Dr. Anthony will perform a physical exam and order diagnostic tests. This might include a mammogram, blood tests, or a biopsy to look for other causes like an infection or the breast tissue (mastitis) or cancer.

Can Gynecomastia Be Treated with Exercise or Pills?

Male breast reduction surgery is the most effective treatment for gynecomastia. Currently, The FDA (Food and Drug Administration) hasn’t approved any medications for the treatment of gynecomastia, though a few breast cancer medications (raloxifene or tamoxifen) can sometimes produce minimal improvements. Upper body weight training to increase the pectoral muscles will not reduce the excess breast tissue, and might even make the breasts look bigger.

Will This Fix Puffy or Pointy Nipples?

Puffy or pointy nipples can sometimes be caused by glandular gynecomastia, and this should be discussed with Dr. Anthony during your consultation. He will personalize your surgical plan based on your personal goals, selecting the best incision pattern and technique to improve your nipples. Oversized areolas can also be corrected in surgery for gynecomastia. Whatever the case may be, Dr. Anthony will listen carefully to your concerns and goals, tailoring a treatment to your specific needs.
