Am I a Candidate?

Otoplasty in San Francisco can be performed at any age, but it’s most common among children and is recommended before the start of elementary school. The treatment is safest and most effective for children six years of age and up. If you’re interested in ear surgery for you or your child, it’s good to know that the best candidates:

  • Are embarrassed due to their ear size
  • Have unseemly ear shape
  • Have ears that protrude out from the head
  • Have turned, stretched, or damaged earlobes

Fantastic surgeon who gave me a natural, beautiful result. Entire experience was top rate - he is very attentive and responsive, available for any questions, and saw me regularly for a year after my surgery to make sure all was going well. I couldn't be happier with the results which took years off and left no visible trace of his work nor any complications whatsoever. This surgeon is also an artist by training, so seems to appreciate a natural look and does not encourage more than is necessary to achieve that natural but enhanced look. Highly recommend.

Dr. Anthony’s Surgical Technique

Our San Francisco ear surgery is performed with either general anesthesia or IV sedation. An incision is most often placed around the back portion of the ear or within the inner folds, at which point Dr. Anthony manipulates the cartilage to create a new contour and natural-looking appearance. It's common for each ear to be addressed during surgery to ensure symmetry. When the procedure is complete, Dr. Anthony will stitch the incisions together with sutures before wrapping them in a protective bandage.

What Can I Expect After My Ear Surgery?

When your procedure is finished, you’ll be released to leave the hospital so you can heal and rest comfortably at home, with aftercare and recovery instructions provided by our staff. You’ll need to avoid touching your ears and lying on them, which means you’ll need to sleep propped up for the first few days of recovery.

You’ll set up a follow-up appointment with Dr. Anthony within three to five days so he can remove your coverings and monitor the healing process. You’ll see visible results right away, with the final results becoming more and more visible as the ears heal.

FAQ

Will the Results of My Ear Surgery Last?

The ears tend to grow faster than other areas of the body and face, which is why ear surgery can be performed on younger patients with long-term outcomes. Dr. Anthony will examine the ears and walk you through what to expect, along with the expected longevity of your results. While many faces might change dramatically over the years, the ears tend to remain relatively unchanged. In the event there are significant modifications to your ears because of an injury, another surgery can always be done.

How Old Should My Child Be?

Most children are great candidates for ear surgery by five to six years. By this time, the ears tend to be fully grown, but the tissue and cartilage are still malleable, making the procedure much easier. This is also an optimal age because most children have either just begun, or are about to begin school, giving them the opportunity to avoid teasing and other social repercussions. While a good deal of ear surgery patients are young children, Dr. Anthony also performs San Francisco otoplasty procedures on adults. It’s never too late to love the way your ears look.

Do I Need to Have Both Ears Done, or Just One?

Most of the issues addressed by otoplasty (oversized or protruding ears, for example), occur in both ears—meaning both will need to be fixed. Dr. Anthony’s aim during surgery is always to create results that are as symmetrical as possible. In cases where just one ear is to be treated, he’ll work to adjust its shape and size so it properly mirrors the untreated ear. When he creates your surgical plan, Dr. Anthony will tell you if one or both ears need to be corrected.

What About Fixing Stretched or Torn Earlobes?

Things like large ear gauges and big earrings have made earlobe reconstruction a popular operation at our practice. If you’re considering getting earlobe repair or reconstruction, schedule an appointment with Dr. Anthony. He will analyze your ears and explain what might be done in order to repair your earlobes.
