What is an Eyelid Lift?

Droopy eyelids can make you look tired and older than you are or make it difficult to apply eye makeup. An eyelid lift, or blepharoplasty, surgically removes excess fat, muscle, and skin from the upper and lower eyelids to redefine the eye shape. When your upper eye contour is restored, you’ll appear years younger and more awake without looking unnatural or overdone.

However, an eyelid lift is not only for rejuvenating the area around the eyes. The procedure may be medically necessary if droopy upper eyelids or a sagging brow obscure your vision. Patients born without an upper eyelid crease may also consider double eyelid surgery.

Am I a Candidate For Blepharoplasty in San Francisco?

If you’re interested in an eyelid lift, you may be an excellent candidate. When you visit us for your consultation, Dr. Anthony will go over treatment options with you according to your goals and areas of concern. Generally, ideal candidates have:

  • Excess, drooping skin
  • Folds on the top eyelid
  • Bloated skin just under the bottom eyelid
  • Hanging skin that folds on the upper eyelid
  • Bulging bags under the eyes

These issues can cause functional difficulties that can impair your vision and get in the way of everyday activity.

What are the Benefits of an Eyelid Lift?

Eyelid surgery is an effective way to eliminate excess skin around the eyes, which can produce a tired and unflattering facial appearance. To learn more about refreshing your eyes with an eyelid lift in San Francisco and the Bay Area, contact us. We will set you up with an in-person consultation with Dr. Anthony to create a custom surgery plan just for you. Eyelid surgery has the ability to:

  • Improve the appearance of sagging eyelids
  • Create a more awake appearance
  • Provide natural yet noticeable improvements
  • Expand your field of vision
  • Make it easier to apply eye makeup
  • Eliminate fine lines
  • Remove wrinkled skin, puffy bags, and dark circles

Surgical Technique

Depending on the type and complexity of your eyelid surgery, some form of anesthesia will be provided. The treatment may be applied to the top eyelid by itself, under or on the bottom eyelid, or a combination of both.

Upper Blepharoplasty

Upper eyelid surgery decreases vision-impairing folds of skin to provide a more awake and appealing look. The incision point is often placed along the eyelid crease to excise loose skin and fatty tissue.

Lower Blepharoplasty

Lower eyelid correction improves puffy and bulging skin, and typically involves a carefully made incision that runs along the lash line. Dr. Anthony will surgically remove tissue and fat before subtly lifting the skin for a softer, flatter look. Lower eyelid incisions may either be completely hidden inside the eyelid (transconjunctival) or carefully hidden on the outer lid along the lash line.

Upper and Lower Blepharoplasty

Combined blepharoplasty addresses the upper and lower eyelids for a completely rejuvenated appearance. All incisions are hidden within the natural creases of the eye, and the procedure lasts up to 2.5 hours. The benefit of combining upper and lower eyelid surgery is that the recovery time remains the same.

Sometimes a non-surgical laser procedure is incorporated to help with discoloration, while fillers can be utilized for increased smoothing and softening.

What Can I Expect from My Blepharoplasty?

Your eyelid surgery can take up to two hours, depending on whether your treatment involves both eyes or just one. After this outpatient surgery, you should plan to recover and rest at home for about a week. A cold compress can help by reducing discomfort, swelling, and bruising during this time.

The outcomes from eyelid surgery often last a decade or longer, but they don’t stop the natural aging process, which can impact results. To maintain your results, other non-surgical cosmetic treatments such as dermal fillers, peels, and lasers can be added for a consistently youthful appearance.

What is Recovery like After Eyelid Surgery?

Patients generally require a week off of work after eyelid surgery. During this time, there will be some swelling and bruising. This will begin to fade in a few days, and slowly continue to diminish over the next week. Sleep on your back for 1-2 weeks and use a cool pack to reduce swelling and improve healing. You may wear glasses by the next day after your procedure, but wait to wear contacts for about ten days to two weeks. You will be able to exercise and do strenuous activities again within 2-4 weeks after your surgery.

Blepharoplasty FAQ

How Much Does Eyelid Surgery Cost?

The cost of an eyelid lift varies, depending on whether you’re having an upper eyelid lift, lower, or both. Dr. Anthony will work with you to create a personalized treatment plan, at which point he’ll also talk with you about estimated costs. We also accept many different payment methods, and will happily help you find low-interest financing options to make your eyelift as affordable as possible.

Will My Eyelid Lift Fix Wrinkles and Crow’s Feet?

Crow’s feet and forehead wrinkles are usually best treated with a facelift, brow lift, or a cheek lift, as the results of an eyelid surgery are typically confined to the eyelids only. A blepharoplasty prodecure can, however, be combined with a non-surgical procedure such as Botox® to combat wrinkles on the forehead and around the eyes. An injectable dermal filler can also be effective by adding volume to hollow areas for a softer, smoother appearance. During your consultation, Dr. Anthony will create a customized treatment plan for you that is based on your personal concerns and goals.

What About Non-Surgical Treatments Instead of Eye Surgery?

Non-surgical skin tightening and cosmetic injectable treatments such as Botox, Juvéderm®, or Restylane® can provide mild improvements to the eyelids. However, if you’re dealing with moderately to severely sagging skin or want lasting results, an eyelid lift might be the more effective option. Dr. Anthony will talk through your concerns and goals, explaining his professional recommendations for your non-surgical or surgical treatment plan. He may even suggest combining both surgical and non-surgical procedures for the best possible results.
